Last weekend I took a trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a wedding. Besides taking full advantage of the open bar, I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and wash my 7 month A.P.C’s in the ocean. Click for the continuation…I got my first pair of A.P.C.’s back in October of 2009. I don’t wear them everyday, I’d say they see the streets at least 4 days of the week. They saw a long, hard and cold winter in Richmond with plenty of snow and rain. They’ve seen muddy fields, dirty ditches, the river banks, trails, beds, couches and floors. So when packing for the beach last week, I figured I might as well give them a good wash in the ocean.
With just two days left in the Outer Banks, I woke up with a few bloody Mary’s and her other friend Mary J, and put my jeans on one leg at a time, just like anyone. Now only basing my denim cleaning knowledge on what I’ve read on the internet, I figured this couldn’t be that hard.
I sat in the sand and basically started to roll around in it, this confused many people. Then taking handfuls of dry sand, rubbed the coarse sand all over the denim, almost scrubbing them. Once I had invested a good five minutes doing that I got up and dove straight into the Atlantic ocean. This confused even more people, but after a good five minute swim I hopped out and walked back to the house. This was the hardest walk I’ve ever walked.

I then, according the internet, rinsed the jeans thoroughly with fresh water from a hose. Just so happened that we were having a post-wedding party that night, so I figured it would be a good time to get in the hot tub with my jeans on. So with two beers in each hand and nothing but dudes in the bubbling water, I hopped in. Soaking in there for about 20 minutes I started to get light headed and got out, stripped down and really got the party going. The jeans air dried in the sun for 2 days. The following pictures are the result from the beach and hot tub, and I have to say, I am very impressed.
The overall result was a bit softer denim, it lost it’s rigidity that it kept for so long and much more defined honeycombs on the wear marks. The overall color of the denim was much more blue than the original color. They fit a bit more snug, I’m assuming this was due to the hot tub, and I couldn’t have been happier with the results.
