Sure there is Woodstock, Coachella, Ibiza and the Caribbean, but the word Anjuna doesn’t quite ring the bell as well. To the tourist, Anjuna is just another beautiful beach in Goa, India. However, if you take a trip back to the late 60′s into the mid-70′s, South Anjuna beach is arguable where more LSD has been taken than anywhere else on the planet. Anjuna was home to the Goan Full Moon Parties and is still one of the last remaining homelands of the original freaks.
The beach, no doubt is beautiful, but it’s all week long 1970′s beach parties are what it’s really known for. Imagine long hair flowing, hundreds of nude bodies lying naked on the sand, music filling the air, waves crashing, the full moon shining and parties filled with nothing but fun and frolic. Sounds perfect right? The pictures tell the rest.
Although these lazy beach days and peaceful parties are a thing of the past here, the raving is what continues, although they’re increasingly being discouraged by the locals and authorities. Now you can spot where the parties are by looking for the flickering lights of the “chai ladies” on the beach. They always congregate where the parties are happening, and the flames from their kerosene lamps are a great signpost. If partying isn’t your thing, Anjuna has one amazing flea market.
