The Ottawa is surprisingly light, yet allows for a very rugged, water-tight boot. The rough side is the flesh side of the hide, and the smooth side is the grain side of the hide. Extremely durable, virtually waterproof naturally, and easy to clean and care for. Wear the crap out of them, allow them to dry and then brush off with a stiff natural brush. The last is built with a lot of volume, as it is expected that a couple pair of socks and/or hiking socks will be worn with them.
The boots construction is based on various techniques to ensure the highest quality and durability in your boot. The Rapid (shorter stitch length stitch) stitch thru the upper into the midsole, the Norvegese stitch thru the upper into the insole, then a flat Vibram rubber base and then the final Vibram Mountain outsole cemented to the rubber base.
The stitching at the sole is of Norvegese Construction, meaning simply that there is an external stitch thru the upper into the INSOLE (the larger stitch length of the two stitches you can see is the true Norvegese stitch) and the upper is ‘pulled out’ on the last, meaning instead of rolling the margin under the last it is bent out to form an L shape which holds the stitch. Very strong construction, the Norvegese stitch is all done by hand in the lap by one of 2 older hands that only work on this construction at the workshop, and unique in that the stitch holds into the insole.
It is completely vegetable tanned and the leather is extensively used in the Tuscany region of Italy in the Polo, horse industry, which is very popular there. The Lo Stivale tannery is characterized for its ‘stuffing’ method for leathers, which still today remains the same as it was 40 years ago: in drums using animal fats and fish oils. The tannery produces ‘vacchetta’ leather, a leather mainly suitable for shoes. Its fatting is based on the so-called ‘lustro’: a mixture of oils, gelatins and animal waxes which is still today put on the leather by hand.
