Interview: Hillary of Collina Strada

Hillary Taymour launched Collina Strada in LA in 2008, and has since gained a huge following for her unique, yet seasonless designs. The line is a true combination of vintage and modern style, and commands attention with its tailored details and quality construction. Using materials such as vegetable dyed leather and organic cotton canvas, she gets a gold star in eco-friendly fashion as well.  If you haven’t noticed, we’re very big fans. We got ahold of Hillary to pick her brain, so click through for her interview- and keep an eye on us for an exclusive collaboration with Collina Strada, launching soon with an in-store event with the designer herself!

Can you tell us a little bit about your process- How do you first begin a new bag?

HT: First I try to find out what’s missing in the normal collection. Whether it’s a small satchel, crossbody, backpack, etc. Then I coordinate to current trends. Next, I think about what my customers need. And I sketch it out, make patterns, and take it to my factory for the first prototype.

Who do you design for? Is there a type of girl you have in mind when creating new pieces?

HT: I try to design for everyone. My customers are truly all ages, so I design mostly for function and necessity. Then I add my aesthetic and its good to go!

How has your work evolved over the years?

HT: I was designing menswear before I started the collection. I think you can still see the emphasis in my work today. I think my work has become more practical and easy to wear through the years. I have just been able to refine my designs season after season.

What’s next for Collina Strada? What can we look forward to seeing from you & what big ideas do you have brewing up next?

HT: Im really trying to push our new clothing collection next, be prepared to see more and more of it. I want to branch out from just leather pieces into more fabrications and see where it takes me. I also am starting some home good projects which I am really excited about.

Thanks Hillary- we can’t wait to see what’s next!
