“Outside comics, if you enjoyed Fifth Element, Space Jam, the Abyss, Little Nemo, Willow, Tron or Alien, you enjoyed the work of Moebius.” -Stephen Mayer
I woke up to a slew of social media updates from friends and colleagues stating that sadly, artist/illustrator powerhouse, Jean Giraud (also known as Gir and Moebius) had passed today at the age of 74 in Paris, in his home. I can say that his work had a huge influence on me from a young age, and many other colleagues and friends in the creative industry.
As a young gun, I remember my biggest influences were The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, King Kong, Jack Kirby, Godzilla and Moebius. My Grandfather introduced me to his work around the first or second grade, but it wasn’t till the end of my college years at The Illustration Academy that I was delightfully reintroduced to the genius of his work. He influenced giant’s such as Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, etc.), and played a profound part in visuals of blockbuster movies for over 25 years.
