As part of our Meet the Maker series, our goal is to bring in and introduce our customers to the people behind the brand. The majority of the goods we carry are not mass produced in factories overseas, but made by hand with attention to detail and care. Meet The Maker(s) features Collina Strada, Courtshop, Dusen Dusen and In God We Trust. Each of these designers has developed an exclusive product for Need Supply Co. We are very excited to host them in-store as they introduce themselves, our collaboration projects and their lines.
Hillary Taymour started Collina Strada after making a bag for herself while living in LA. She was working as a designer at another corporation and everyone loved the bag, now known as the Ferra bag. “I got compliments everywhere, even from buyers, so I just decided to start a whole collection.” That was 3 years ago, and Collina Strada is now in its 7th collection, which was recently shown at the Lincoln Center. This collaboration was a revamp of some current styles. We added some color blocking to make it super fun and pop for Spring. We love the effect it gives to the bags and puts emphases on Hillary’s signature pleats.
Launched in 2010, COURTSHOP is New York’s only downtown denim brand. Specializing in high waist cuts in clean, classic washes, COURTSHOP uses only premium denim and attention is placed on fit, rather than excessive branding or embellishments. Designer Nicole Tondre has 12 years experience in technical design. To produce the line, Nicole partnered up with veteran denim manufacturer Shikhar Shah, whose father founded Mexx in the 80′s. COURTSHOP established their own dedicated factory, which enables them to produce a top quality jean at an approachable price point, and their NYC flagship store acts as a testing ground for each new collection. For our collaboration, courtshop created hand dyed, one of a kind denim shorts. Denim cut-offs are a Virginia Summer staple. We like that No TWO pairs are alike.
Ellen Van Dusen started Dusen Dusen with a handmade line for Spring 2009.She never had formal training, but had always made clothes for herself. She approached Duo, and store in the East Village, and they picked it up, re-ordered, re-ordered again, and she found herself constantly sewing. She quit her job, took the line full time, and made her first collection to be produced for Spring 2010. Ellen’s collaboration is her favorite shape from the spring collection with some of her all-time favorite prints. The shark print is really fun and the dots print is on super soft, drapey denim that she loves. This event marks her first time in Richmond.
In 2003, Shana Tabor threw caution to the wind (along with her professional career) and by 2004, she had started her own collection of jewelry aptly named In God We Trust. During late 2005, Tabor added apparel to the mix, and was hand-producing multi-pieces of each style on her own. Going against the grain of most brands, In God We Trust prides itself on manufacturing all of their designs exclusively in the USA. Currently all design and production of the In God We Trust jewelry collections is done in-house in Greenpoint. The In God We Trust team jumped at the opportunity to work creatively with a company that shares the same fun-loving aesthetic. They love Need Supply and the products we love, so it wasn’t very hard for them to come up with something that represents the two of us.
On Friday, March 23rd from 6-8pm, the designers from all four lines will be in the store debuting their collaborations for Need Supply. We’d love it if you stopped by for some good food, music, and of course, fun.
