How has surfing (especially female surfing) influenced Australian culture and fashion?
SC: Surfing is an expression as much as it is artistic. Fashion, art and surfing are all linked so naturally it influences fashion in many ways. A large percentage of the Australian population live by the coast, so the beach lifestyle is massive part of Australian culture. Surfing and beach culture has always been a unique way of life to every way that you live and when it’s your love it’s your lifestyle. So swimwear and your clothing simply become part of the daily inspirations you experience when living by the sea.
What are the similarities and differences in designing swimwear and designing clothing?
SC: Each season we collaborate with a selection of commissioned artists and so the majority of both our swimwear and clothing prints coincide across the categories. Swim has a more functional effort in their designs so as to be comfortable when in the surf as well as a fashionable cut – where as our clothing has a more loose relaxed feel that we like to call apres surf.
What do you keep in mind when designing the fit of a suit, and what is the importance of a well-fitting suit?
SC: It’s THE most important part of a swimsuit. Swim can be difficult to design to fit all bodies, however the trick is making certain straps and rouching adjustable. It’s also a high priority to ensure the quality of the lycra and fabrics that you use - Tallow uses the highest quality lycras available on the market to ensure the prints dont fade, and they keep their elasticity and shape.
Why do you think summer is so great?
SC: The sunshine is natural stimulant - there is nothing better than having a hot day on the beach and coming home with that salty sandy feeling!
