Simon and Mary is a family-run hat company in Johannesburg that has been in operation since 1935. The company was founded by Simon Pozniak’s father, Mordechai, who fled from Poland to South Africa in the 1930’s. Simon grew the business until he boasted the title of largest felt hat manufacturer in Africa. Simon’s millinery skills and expertise have been passed down the family line through four generations and are still in use today. The company uses traditional millinery machines from the 1960’s to create a variety of carefully crafted hats that draw inspiration from styles of yesteryear.
The latest iteration of the company is run by Simon’s grandson Dean, who named the brand after his grandfather and grandmother Leah. She was affectionately nicknamed Mary after the main female character in War & Peace, when she read Simon Leo Tolstoy’s novel while he was recuperating from heart surgery.
The brand was given fresh art direction by creative duo Jana + Koos, who created Simon and Mary’s elegant branding. The latest Simon and Mary lookbook features fashionable people from Johannesburg, photographed by Aimee Pozniak and Gareth Place, in various locations around the city.
