Take a step back in to the golden years of surfing. Tracking, a new film by director and filmer Jimmy James Kinnaird follows surfers Ellis Ericson, Jason Salisbury, Niah and Mia through the jungles and waves of Indonesia. One of the best things about summer is all of the great music festivals happening all over the world. They’re not only amazing events for seeing your favorite bands and finding new favorite ones, but also for the best people watching and style-gazing. Everyone has them, everyone wears them and this will remain. T-Shirts are often like our second skin, our favorite ones telling more of a story than our crazy uncle. France’s So Me have created a short documentary called T-Shirt Stories: a dive into the contemporary counter-culture around the world of t-shirts and the characters that wear them. It’s official: It is HOT here in Virginia. And although we love summer, the rising temperatures sometimes make it difficult to pull a great look together and still keep cool with not a lot of clothing. I’ve been scouring the internet to see how other people do it- look cool when it’s hot out. Here are my picks for summer street style inspiration!

We saw these over at The Blaaahg and just started to drool. Brooklyn, New York, summer, 1974, film – shot by Danny Lyon. You really can’t ask for a better vibe of kids, water, grit, freedom, hustle, bustle, heat and late nights. Makes you want to go bust open your own fire hydrant and drain the city. Let these photos be your fuel for the summer.

You can pretty much trace surfing back 1000 years. During that time, sometime in the 1770′s, Captain James Cook described watching Hawaiian surf riders, “…these men must feel the most supreme pleasure while he was being driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea.” But the sport wouldn’t truly have made the mark that it has made today without one man. Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (Duke Kahanamoku) – what most consider the greatest surfer of the century.

From her work with Rudi Gernreich to her romantic affair with photographer William Claxton, Peggy Moffitt instantly set iconic looks of 60′s pop fashion. As she began modeling for Gernreich, her signature image began to evolve. She wore false eyelashes and heavy eye makeup, drawing on not only current trends but Japanese Kabuki theater. Her hairstyle, created by Vidal Sassoon, a totally unique hair cut became known as the “five point”. Here’s a little tribute…

It’s no secret that we’re in love with Australian fashion. It’s also no secret that there are a multitude of stylish women & men traipsing all over the streets down under. Sydney Street Style is a blog documenting, well, Sydney street style. I’ve picked out a few of my favorite looks, but you should head over to SSS to see for yourself!

Pen Pencil Stencil is a one-man-creative run by Mark Giglio (not to be confused with Gigolo) out of Oakland, California. Mark has dabbled in many different mediums from print and fabric all the way to wood. His work has been used by Apple Inc., Dwell Magazine, Herman Miller and more. Not bad for a solo portfolio. Our good friend Hunter is an avid thrifter, sewer and crafter, as well as one of the most stylish girls we know. She’s combined her love for all these things with her ’365 Days of Thrift’ project, in which she wears at least one piece from a thrift or second hand store every day for one year and documents the entire journey. To further challenge herself, she tries her best not repeat thrifted items, and alters many pieces into more current styles. Follow 365 Days of Thrift to keep up with her process along the way, and see the great looks she pulls together!

Sure, she had a bit of a drinking problem and was voted “Most Slut Potential”, but Rayanne Graff (of My So Called Life) was more than just that friend your mom never quite approves of. For one, she had a killer sense of style. Always looking like she just rolled out of bed and threw on whatever was next to it on the floor really worked for her, and she was the epitome of 90′s grunge done right. Plus- that hair! The braids, curls, multiple colors and general awesomeness of Rayanne Graff’s hair still inspires me to this day. It’s almost officially summer, which means flea markets, yard sales, rooftop parties and music festivals- all of which are also favorites for street style photographer Mr. Newton to find gaggles of fashionable girls to snap photos of. Ali MacGraw is an American actress known best for her role in the 1970 film Love Story, in which she was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe award. She also modeled and styled for Vogue in the 70′s and quickly became a style icon for her natural beauty and preppy looks. I’ve pulled together some of my favorite shots of Ali- they will instantly make you want to break out that flat iron and rock a center part again!

While doing some online inspiration searching for a little project we have in the works, we came across one of most forgotten bikes in history over at Cork Grips, the Cycle Truck! Dating back to 1898 and probably even earlier, the cycle truck was created for the sole purpose of hauling your gear and groceries around town. It could be called your medium duty cargo bike, or a heavy duty commuter – the label is meaningless. Bottom line, this guy is a hauler and more than that it handles with simple responsiveness of a thoughtfully built bike.

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week just wrapped, and as usual, the attendees looked just as good as the runways! The beautiful Sydney weather allowed for lightly layered looks without too muss fuss, and I love how many people dressed playfully in brights. Here’s a sampling of some of my favorite RAFW street style looks.

Here’s the thing about even just one day of warm weather after a slew of blustery winter ones, when you live in the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast, you want more of it! I mean, really, who wouldn’t? So even though the forecast here, for the next week or so, predicts a hot rainy mess, we can all still get pumped for the days where the sun shines so brightly, you get tan without even trying…

This is Freja, a 20-year-old shop assistant in Copenhagen. I found her on street style blog The Locals and have been obsessing over her ever since. She knows how to wear layers extremely well for transitioning into warmer weather, and I absolutely LOVE the perfect shade of caramel brown accessories, and offbeat color choices such as mustard yellow and forest green. Inge Jacobsen uses sewing, weaving and embroidering to create art from mass imagery such as high fashion magazines (like these Vogue covers!) ads and even pornographic images. These covers and pages of Vogue were cross-stitched into, making each piece tactile and unique. Denise Nestor is obsessed with bunnies, and I’m obsessed with her illustrations. Nestor is an illustrator living in working in Dublin. Yes, of course, she draws other things besides bunnies, but I can’t help but love how often they pop up in her drawings. See more of her work at Trendland and her portfolio site.

I’ve been stuck in a hair rut. Years of growing and damage have left me with a rats nest that I’m less than proud of. So, I went to see my friend SarahMarie, who along with her friend Ashley own Envy Salon here in Richmond. I’m always inspired by young people doing big things, and these girls are no exception. Ok, so maybe the early 1990′s isn’t exactly vintage yet, but I just couldn’t resist. Clarissa Explains It All was (ok, is) one of my favorite TV shows of all time, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t because of her outrageous and amazingly kooky outfits. Clarissa’s hobbies were photography, journalism, and listening to rock music, and she was most well-known for her unique and delightfully tacky fashion sense. Sure there is Woodstock, Coachella, Ibiza and the Caribbean, but the word Anjuna doesn’t quite ring the bell as well. To the tourist, Anjuna is just another beautiful beach in Goa, India. However, if you take a trip back to the late 60′s into the mid-70′s, South Anjuna beach is arguable where more LSD has been taken than anywhere else on the planet. Anjuna was home to the Goan Full Moon Parties and is still one of the last remaining homelands of the original freaks.

We just stumbled on an amazing post over at the Jake Davis blog showing some great stills taken from the 1977 Jamaican film, Rockers. The 35mm slides show Jamaican culture during it’s prime shot by the producer’s wife, Cherry Kaoru Hulsey. They do enough talking for themselves. The book containing these photos, released in 20o1 is available at Rest Store, apparently the only store in the USA where it’s available.

Cat Party posted these amazing Life Magazine photos of blonde bombshell Jayne Mansfield’s home and I’m reconsidering my own home decor. Part Barbie dream house and part Hollywood mansion, this home is really a dream come true for the heart-shaped princess inside all of us. See the original post here.

It’s nearly impossible to look back in the history books of surfing and not see the photography of Australian John Witzig. John was there at Bells Beach, Queensland, Gold Coast and Apollo Bay. He was there when the waves were bigger than you could fit in your lens and he was there when there were no waves at all. W nearly forgot about this guy until Saturday’s and decided to share a little photographic history on him, enjoy.

The perfect transition into warmer weather- soft taupe colored suede lightens any outfit, while the Croc print and combat-like structure still allows room for some sass.

I just returned from a trip to Madrid & Barcelona, and am currently obsessed with all things Spanish. Anna Higgie is an artist and illustrator based in Barcelona, Spain.
