I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform live a handful of times, and have loved watching him push himself creatively, try new things and really come into his own. This guy is the real deal, and I can’t wait to see where he goes. If this new song is any indication, I think we’re in for good things.

I was instantly transported back to my wannabe days of sophomore year, when I wore sweatbands and spiky jewelry, rode a skateboard, listened to emo music and thought I was too cool for school.

Yesterday I stumbled across Jayne Min from Stop It Right Now, whose effortless and modern approach might actually inspire me to incorporate a little grunge in a more feminine, grown-up way. Wonder what she would have worn on the red carpet!

While my Honda Element isn’t exactly as cool as these old cars, a girl can still dream… right?

These exploits caught the attention of brands like Patagonia and consequently, he soon found himself camping and surfing in far away lands such as Kamchatka, Russia accompanied by legendary surfers. During his travels, he continues to poach internet in order to run his website The Burning House that prompts readers with the question “If your house were on fire, what would you take?” and recently, he published a book of the site’s best submissions in July of last year.

For as long as I’ve known Foster, I’ve always been super impressed by his ability to execute the many plans that are swirling around his head. His motivation is uniquely refreshing, as it seems to differ from that of the typical goal oriented young-go-hard. Instead, he accomplishes so much just out of genuine interest and enjoyment of new endeavors. Even before he moved into his van, you could often find him waking up before sunrise to catch good light and hopping into his dumpy sedan just for the sake of searching for anything of interest. These interests have lead him down a unique path and I thought it’d be cool to ask him a few questions about them and share photographs from his travels.

Ian: Hello wasabi. Where are you right now? What are you up to? 

Foster: Right now I am in Cologne Germany on a three week road trip with my younger brother working on a project for Grey Advertising and Allianz.

Ian: Since starting The Burning House project, has it taken on a new direction? Would you now personally take something different if you were in a burning house? 

Foster: Seeing people’s selections for the burning house has changed my relationship to material things without a doubt.  When I started the project I had twenty things that I would take,  now it’s just my undeveloped film. Other than that, everything can be replaced.

Ian: Have you ever gotten emails from people that are stoked on you and decided to pursue a lifestyle similar to yours?

Foster: I’ve gotten a handful of emails from people saying they’ve bought a van or are planning on getting a camper. It’s crazy. If my travels can inspire people like that, then it’s great. I hope people will get into vanlife.

Ian: Have you had some sketch encounters on the road with your van? Are you becoming a pro mechanic?

Foster: I’ve had a lot of breakdowns. 26 year old cars have their fare share of problems. Mine has 350k miles on it. It wouldn’t be a road trip with out little hiccups though. I’ve learned a lot about cars but it’s really hard to work on your cars while on the road. You need a bunch of tools and space. I tend to leave the work to the pros.

Ian: What’s your favorite part about living out of your car?

Foster: My favorite part of living in my camper is that you can go anywhere. It’s like having a mobile fort. My life is self contained and spontaneous.

Ian: Have you picked up any new hobbies lately as a result?

Foster: I haven’t picked up any new hobbies while living on the road but I’ve certainly become obsessed with surfing. It’s my favorite thing to do.

Ian: I hear that you’ve become a mad man with your sling shot. Have you killed and eaten any vermin with that thing or just target practice? 

Foster: I haven’t killed anything with a sling shot in 10 years. When I was a kid I was deadly with one. I’ve killed squirrels and a handful of birds. These days it’s target practice. Zen and the art of the sling shot.

Ian: I remember you being hyped on New York City for a while. Do you still think fondly of your time living there or do you look back at it as more of a realization of what you didn’t want? 

Foster: I love New York,  it’s such an amazing city. The people and energy is incredible there. Some day in the future I may live there if the situation is right.

Ian: What have some of your favorite trips been since heading west?

Foster: My first trip to Baja in January 12 was life changing. It was amazing and the perfect place to go with the syncro. I also really enjoyed going to the basque Country with Cyrus Sutton and Ryan Burch. It was the best surf of my life and a really inspiring trip.

Ian: Are there any parts of the continental US that you still would really like to explore? 

Foster: Id like to explore the Rockies from Arizona/New Mexico up to Canada. I’m going to do that this summer.

Ian: Snowboarding used to be a huge part of your life. Has surfing sort of taken over that? 

Foster: I have more fun surfing than I ever did snowboarding. Resorts are a bummer. You pay 100$ to be around a bunch tourists. I’d rather be on a beach.

Ian: Do you think you’ve found your niche of activities and work for the foreseeable future? You seem really pumped on everything. Is there anything else out there that you think you’d like to get into? 

Foster: I’m just trying to make the best of the opportunities that come my way with the hope that they will open doors down the road. I have no idea what I’ll be working on in six months. I take solace in that. It keeps me motivated and excited. I really love taking photos and coming up with ideas for visuals and stories. I imagine I’ll keep focusing on these.

Ian: Any trips or projects teed up for the near future? 

Foster: I’m starting to work on a vanlife book. Not sure exactly how or who is going to publish it, but I’d love to make something beautiful that people can look at off line.
