Brooklyn based tattoo artist Scott Campbell just ended his first ever sold out solo show at Mexico Cities Vice Gallery (yes, related to the Canadian magazine) ahead of time. From Interview Magazine:
“An e-mail recently surfaced on Purple Diary’s Tumblr that was sent from New York-based artist Scott Campbell to Purple Magazine’s founder, Olivier Zahm. The e-mail simply read that Scott had some problems with his concerns being taken seriously by the gallery owner at his recent sold-out show at Mexico City’s Vice Gallery (an edition of the Canadian magazine of the same name)—so he pulled his work on the sidewalk in front of the gallery and lit it on fire. The post revealed something about Campbell’s state of mind—”It felt amazing,” Campbell wrote—but raised a lot of questions.”
Our friend Sway sat down with him last night in his Brooklyn home to find out what really happened down south. Click here to read the full interview.

Music has and will continue to influence style more than any other means of pop culture in existence (in our humble opinion). Johnny Cash wouldn’t be Johnny Cash with out a black suit and Kanye wouldn’t be Kanye without clean sneakers. You have to have slick tie to match that treble clef, it’s just part of the gig. Our friends over at EveryGuyed created ‘Ensemble: The Style of Music’ a series of posters featuring Iconic Outfits from 20 Male Musicians. He’s not the most recognizable face nor the most familiar name, except if you’re in the small niche of people that have a love for typography and script. Hermann Zapf is a German typeface designer who just so happens to be married to calligrapher and typeface designer Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. Can you imagine what their love letters to each other looked like?
Zapf’s work, which includes fonts Palatino and Optima, has been widely copied, often against his will. The best known example may be Monotype’s Book Antiqua, which shipped with Microsoft Office and was widely considered a “knockoff” of Palatino. In 1993, Zapf resigned from ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) over what he viewed as its hypocritical attitude toward unauthorized copying by prominent ATypI members. He remains today as one of the most badass dudes in type. Click for the video.

Last Friday I purchased my first pair of Red Wing boots ever. On my bike ride home sat a pair of Red Wing 877 Original 8″ mocs, a man’s boot. I had tried them on in the store and they were amazing, everything I could ask for. I wore them out that evening to run a few errands figuring that it was a perfect day to start the breaking-in process of American made leather.
Near the end of the day I started to feel something rubbing on my left heel. It only got worse. I took them off that night to reveal some blisters on my heel. I reached in the boot and could feel a piece of the leather sticking out – without a doubt causing that discomfort. The next day I contact the shop manager with my issue. His response, “Just bring them back and get a new pair or a refund. Redwing will stand behind them.”
The new pair fits perfectly, no irritation whatsoever. That my friends, is called standing behind your product. Click for the continuation.

Have they every lead you wrong? I don’t think so. The Fall 2010 Big Black Book from Esquire is available now on newsstands.
“The new fall 2010 issue features an enjoyable 190 pages of gentlemanly style and service. It includes everything from a story on classic coats, to a breakdown of the different varietals of sheep and their particular wool (do not scoff, knowledge of such matters is important), pictures of Alex Carleton on a boat, Alex Calderwood’s thoughts on Tokyo at Christmas time and the Big Black (purple) Book includes a photo essay of Billy Reid on-the-hunt down south. Plus, lots of suits, watches, socks, boots, bags and denim. It even has a photo Esquire.com Style Editor Josh Peskowitz in a scratchy wool turtleneck and captain’s hat — about to trade his keyboard and G11 for a lobster pot. Basically, the Big Black Book will be the best $10 you spend all month.” – ACL

For the Spring/Summer 2011 line, Tory Burch gives us a really great twist on 1970′s style. The color palette of neutrals, navy and mustard was right on point and was topped off with platform wedges and sandals, statement necklaces and practical handbags. Our good friend Sway from Interview recently sat down to talk to another good friend of ours, Nathan Brown, star of Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void, in which he plays a young drug dealer named Oscar who, after his death, watches over his sister (Paz de la Huerta) in a psychedelic vision of Tokyo.
