This morning when I laced up my 8″ Irish Setters I thought back and remembered the first day I wore them. How stiff they were, how clean they were, and how many miles I had to go in them. Now, nearly four months later, they’ve broken in so perfectly that I prefer to wear them over any other shoe.

From the Heartland is an upcoming photo exhibition showing the hardworking men and women of Red Wing Shoes. The European exhibition starts in Berlin at Bread & Butter then moving to Copenhagen Fashion Week and ending in Amsterdam. Not to worry, you can catch all the photographs online starting in February.

I go through phases of liking Neil, loving Neil, then for some reason, hating Neil. But the hating Neil is only like 4.2% so don’t worry. Right now I’m in a love Neil phase, and it’s been lasting a bit longer than normal. We’ve compiled a few of our all time favorite Neil songs for you to enjoy.

I’m not sure where or how I first heard this album, but all I remember is that I was nine years old. My best friend and I would play “When I Come Around” on repeat for hours in my room as well as stare off into the album cover and try and figure things out. We both were in the process of growing our hair our, liking girls, skating, and totally decorating our JanSport book bags with whiteout and patches. This goes out to you 1994. Click on.

While you might still be gawking at James Franco sawing his arm off, another roll that’s note worthy is his take on Allen Ginsberg in Howl. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffery Friedman, Franco plays the late poet Allen Ginsberg in San Francisco during the early 50′s. This generational film puts a light on the Beat Generation and their forerunners such as Kerouac, Burrough and Ginsberg himself. Click for the trailer.

Based in Spain, artist Osman Granda first started designing web pages, then flash pages, then motion graphics, then into designing visuals for dance clubs, then on to working with Barcelona-based studio Pornographics where he did a little bit of everything. He then got tired of Barcelona and went back to his home town where he currently does tons of freelance work. The video after the jump should explain the rest.

1971 was a good year if you rode a motorcycle. It was the year that “On Any Sunday” was released – a documentary focusing on the stars of motorcycle racing, including film star Steve McQueen. Narrated by Bruce Brown’s subtle voice, the film asks the question “Why do they do it?” It take a look at people who devote (and sometimes risk) their lives to racing on tracks and off-road courses around the world.

A certain segment in the film takes us to an area about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah to a notorious hill nicknamed, “The Widowmaker”, and you can see why. Click for the video.

Our good friends at Apolis Activism just got back from their Vietnam expedition where they were product testing and documenting their travels as they normally do. “Raan Parton of Apolis and Videographer Dave Christenson were among the few on the journey.  Their trip was down the Ho Chi Minh trail which runs from North Vietnam to South Vietnam via 1950′s Russian Minsk bikes.  I’m excited to see the film in it’s entirety when it releases November 11” -F.Man

Today marks a sad day in the music world, especially that of reggae lovers. “The Cool Ruler”, also known as Gregory Isaacs has passed today in London battling a long fight with cancer. He was 59. Click for the continuation.

By the looks of this trailer, Javier Bardem is in line for another killer performance. Every shot revealed in this clip seems confusing in the most beautiful way, the thought of trying to predict this plot just stresses me out. He’s not the most recognizable face nor the most familiar name, except if you’re in the small niche of people that have a love for typography and script. Hermann Zapf is a German typeface designer who just so happens to be married to calligrapher and typeface designer Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. Can you imagine what their love letters to each other looked like?

Zapf’s work, which includes fonts Palatino and Optima, has been widely copied, often against his will. The best known example may be Monotype’s Book Antiqua, which shipped with Microsoft Office and was widely considered a “knockoff” of Palatino. In 1993, Zapf resigned from ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale) over what he viewed as its hypocritical attitude toward unauthorized copying by prominent ATypI members. He remains today as one of the most badass dudes in type. Click for the video.

How do you write about these guys without referencing Peter Gabriel or Don Henley? Dressed in all black, these grown-up New Yorker’s are producing a sound that our parents would love. If you shut your eyes you’ll swear it was Genesis was all over these tracks. Brooklyn’s Francis and the Lights are now on their third album and with some recent action from R&B star Drake, I think they’re finally getting the attention they deserve. Have a listen for yourself below and then click for the video, that dance solo at the end should say it all. It’s good music, period.

Francis and the Lights – Knees to the Floor

Last Friday I purchased my first pair of Red Wing boots ever. On my bike ride home sat a pair of Red Wing 877 Original 8″ mocs, a man’s boot. I had tried them on in the store and they were amazing, everything I could ask for. I wore them out that evening to run a few errands figuring that it was a perfect day to start the breaking-in process of American made leather.

Near the end of the day I started to feel something rubbing on my left heel. It only got worse. I took them off that night to reveal some blisters on my heel. I reached in the boot and could feel a piece of the leather sticking out – without a doubt causing that discomfort. The next day I contact the shop manager with my issue. His response, “Just bring them back and get a new pair or a refund. Redwing will stand behind them.”

MEN OF THE CLOTH gives us a window into the past, present and future of custom tailoring, a craft whose roots are in the Italian Renaissance but whose branches extend from small towns in the Apennine Mountains of Italy and the outskirts of Palermo, Sicily, all the way to New York’s Madison Avenue and the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Master tailors Nino Corvato and Checchino Fonticoli acquired their old World tailoring skills while working as young apprentices in local tailor shops. After they finished their apprenticeships, however, neither one was satisfied with the local opportunities available as independent tailors. Click for the trailer.

Pointer follow-up on their recent video Pointer: Made in Portugal with another short documentary outlining the production process behind their Benson model. The video entails the step-by-step methods at Pointer’s Portuguese shoe factory including various hand-executed steps. Hope you all get a chance to look out at the moon tonight. This evening is a Harvest moon, meaning the moon is at or about the period of fullness that is nearest to the autumnal equinox. So take it in, it’s a wonderful night. But what makes things even cooler is that NASA is calling tonight a Super Harvest Moon because northern autumn is beginning on the night of a full moon. Just stumbled across this great video about a nun / artist / activist from the 50s and 60s. When days of civil unrest was an everyday acknowledgement and war was touching everyones lives, Sister Corita was a 17 year old ready to commit her life to God, in turn expressing her voice through her services and art. Though she wasn’t just known because she wasn’t just known for her “rebelious” nun behavior, it was her screen printing techniques and the creative use of words & color that at the time that really set her apart from the rest of the penguins. Being native to Virginia, more so, native to the Blue Ridge Mountains, seeing sights like this are familiar and beautiful. I grew up about an hour and a half from West Virginia, prime coal country, but often ventured into Nelson County, through the farm lands of the Shenandoah Valley and into maple syrup forests of Highland County which neighbors the coal deserts of West Virginia. The rivers in these mountains are literally roaring with life and the trees have more to say than you could ever hear. In West Virginia, coal mines were what formed the towns that exist today. Without the discovery of coal in those mountains, West Virginia and the majority of Appalachia would not be what they are today. Take a second to watch the video after the continuation. (via)

Colloquially known as “The Black Woodstock”, it featured the greats of B.B.King, Sly & The Family Stone, and of course, Nina herself. The festival organizer could not sell the footage domestically as a concert film nearly 40 years ago. If you’re at that period in your life where you’re ready for the next step in transpiration, let us veer you away from a $5000 track frame, a “fix me everyday” moped, or an overpriced new car. Step back real quick to Jamaica, circa 1972. Reggae is in it’s prime and scootin’ around that island took the right equipment. Before sport bikes and all that bullshit, Jamaica’s top choice of transportation besides floating around off grade-A ganja, was the Honda CB200. A back to basics motorbike that Honda created for everyday use. Get familiar son! It was such a beautifully designed piece of equiptment that reggae artists Dillinger wrote a song about it. If you’re as old as I am and you surfed way back when I did, you probably remember this one. There weren’t a million of anything back then, and it was a big deal when a new surf video was released. There were only a few companies that did it, and fewer that did it this well. Footage was in slow-motion and narrated. Now it’s fast and joined by the hottest punk band, which is fine, but sometimes it’s good to go back.

Beyond the excitement due to bringing in Apolis Activism, we’re equally as thrilled on the Transit Elite film release which was filmed on their recent trip to Nepal. Click to see the video.
