Heineken, working with Wieden + Kennedy, has decided to celebrate Father’s Day this year by popularizing some seriously bad (read as: awesome) dad jokes. The best part about this compilation is that everyone can contribute to the ever-growing collection of cheesy, eye-roll-inducing dad jokes by tweeting it out and hashtagging it with #dadjokes to @Heineken_US. The beer company has then been ‘meme-ifying’ a select few by posting them next to some classically vintage dad photos. All through Father’s Day, (which is today, by the way) a dedicated #dadjokes Tumblr will be updated like a dad joke hall of fame, as all the best dad jokes get archived there for everyone to view. We all had or know of a dad who just wouldn’t stop making those horrible (again, read as: awesome) one-liners — here’s a few for old times sake and maybe send your own to Heineken for the ultimate Father’s Day gift…the day is not over yet.

Bohemian chic style seems to be going nowhere and lately we’ve been seeing a new spin on floral headdresses. Wearing flowers in your hair is tricky business and can go from cool to cheesy fast, so for this look you’re not gonna want any old daisy chain. We found a DIY recipe for floral wreaths on Design Sponge, who’s a fan of the flower crown for winter weddings, though we think they’re just perfect for summer music festivals. Get your flower child on with these simple instructions.

Tips to Keep in Mind

When choosing flowers to use in your head wreath, research the varieties and how long they hold up outside of water.

If you’re using this for a wedding or event, make your wreath only a few hours prior to the event.

When not wearing, keep your wreath spritzed with fresh water and store in the fridge or a cool location. This will give the out-of-water flowers longevity.

If you choose to create an asymmetrical composition for your floral wreath with a pop of flowers on one side, you may need to secure the wreath with bobby pins on the opposite side to counter the weight of the flowers.

Materials

craft wire

flowers

floral tape

vines (optional)

Instructions

1. Using wire or a thin woody vine, wrap it around your head to find the desired circumference. We love our wreaths to hug the head at an angle as opposed to being parallel to the ground. If using a vine like we chose, cut the vine to fit and secure the ends together with wire to form your wreath base.

2. Looking in a mirror, determine the placement of your floral pops and mark accordingly. Once you wire one cluster of flowers, reposition the wreath on your head to see if you need to make any adjustments and/or additions.

3. We wrapped our more delicate flowers with floral tape to lock in moisture. Then, with the wire, we secured clusters of flowers around the perimeter. Once we inserted our flowers, we went back in with greens to add texture and mask the stems. Crisscrossing the wire holds the stems to the vine; this makes it easy to squeeze the greens into the wreath by gently adding them between the floral stems and the wire.

4. Try it on! Are you starting to feel like a lady of antiquity? Want more, want less? Make adjustments and secure with bobby pins if the wreath tilts to one side or another.

Hair. We’ve all got it (well, most of us anyway). And ladies, as we all know, getting it to look just right can be tricky business, and then getting it to stay that way is even trickier. Perhaps fashion queen Ines de la Fressange summed it up best, “I used to wash my hair every morning, but sometimes I think it looks better not totally clean. I think it is awful to have your hair too well done. When you are young, it looks cheap to have your hair perfect, and when you are old, it looks tacky”. Bold words, but she has a good point. Besides, washing your everyday strips it of its natural oils, leaving your mane dry and brittle, and store bought dry shampoo, upwards of $6 a pop, adds up. We thought it was high time we looked into what exactly dry shampoo even is, and if it’s possible to make our own. Turns out, it is.

Dry shampoo has actually been around for centuries, but has enjoyed a recent resurgence of popularity because many beauty experts recommend washing your hair less frequently to keep it healthy. So what exactly is it? In its essence, dry shampoo is just that — a dry substance that cleans your hair without the use of water. Dry shampoo works by absorbing oil from your scalp and hair, making it look and feel freshly washed again. The ingredients in the spray-type of dry shampoo are usually a mixture of aerosol propellants, absorbing agents, solvents, conditioning agents and fragrance. It is not meant to take the place of regularly washing your hair with water, but to serve as a means of lengthening time between washes or to use in a pinch (or, in my case, an excuse to push the snooze button one last time).

Here are the ingredients to make your own dry shampoo:

2 Tablespoons Cornstarch

2 Tablespoons Baking Soda

2 Tablespoons Cornmeal

2 Tablespoons Ground Oatmeal

A shaker -type container to store dry shampoo (or a jar with a lid, a nail, a hammer, and a little elbow grease…in other words, make your own shaker).

Step 1: Grind up oatmeal in a blender. You want it to be fine enough to be able to go through a salt shaker, so give it some time in the blender.

Step 2: Measure out 2 tablespoons each of: cornstarch, cornmeal, baking soda, and the ground up oatmeal. Mix it all together in a bowl and you’ve got yourself some dry shampoo.

Step 3: Pour your fancy new dry shampoo into a shaker- like container. See how economical you are? You’ve just made several doses worth of your own dry shampoo.

Step 4: Sprinkle some dry shampoo onto your hand or sprinkle it straight onto your scalp. Either way works.

Step 5: Shampoo. Which in this case, means scrubbing your head like you would in the shower, all lathered up, only…don’t add water. This is where all those ground up ingredients gather all the oils from your hair and scalp.

Step 6: Now brush. This is key – use a boar bristle or round bristle brush or it won’t work properly, and its probably best to do this over a sink or tub. Some people complain about dry shampoo leaving a white residue behind, if this is the case for you, you’re not brushing enough or simply using the wrong kind of brush.

Step 7: That’s it! You’re all dry shampooed. And even if you don’t smell like a million bucks, you sure look like it. Now, style your hair like you normally would, and pat yourself on the back for not only being frugal, but also for all that time you’ll save in the morning tomorrow.

Whether you choose to make your own, or shell out the dough for some at the drugstore, its best to remember that dry shampoo will only help to absorb excess oil and it won’t necessarily clean out the dirt and grime from a long day’s work. Good enough for your lunch break after a quick trip to the gym? Sure. Good enough before a big first date? Probably not so much.

Halloween is just around the corner, so here’s a costume idea (and history lesson) if you’re stumped ladies!

Biba was an iconic and popular London fashion store of the 60’s and 70’s that morphed into a fashion label, a feeling, and a mood all it’s own. Biba was loved by the likes of Bianca Jagger, Twiggy, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Marianne Faithful to name a few. The look was a unique mix of Art Nouveau decor and Rock & Roll excess which equaled 100% awesome.

Biba was started by Barbra Hulanicki and her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon as a humble mail order business in the early 1960’s, but blossomed into a chic department store in Kensington by September of 1964. Soon, Biba would encompass four direct selling shops, all in London, all within easy walking distance of each other and among the shopgirls was a young Anna Wintour, later editor of Vogue. In 1969, they opened their fifth store, an epic seven story department store (which at the time was unheard of) that sold almost everything – from A-line shift dresses and wellingtons to makeup and even Biba blend coffee. What had started as a just an innovative department store had turned into a lifestyle brand for the ladies of London.

Sadly, Biba closed around 1975 but in it’s heyday, ”the Biba girl” took the sixties and seventies fashion world by storm. With a look that was decedent and dark but yet floral and feminine: berry colors and prints, golds and blacks, turbans, prairie dresses, and tights, it all added up to a hodgepodge gypsy look that’s unmistakably Biba. Biba broke the rules, or rather changed the rules for younger female Londoners. During a time when a young woman would still dress in the image of her mother, Biba encourage a whole new look, and it’s a style that continues to be copied today and has influenced such designers as Betsey Johnson, Anna Sui, and Vivienne Westwood.

Dads are pretty rad. They teach us about sports, girls, and driving a stick shift. They can usually get us out of trouble before Mom finds out, but they’re the first to whip us into shape when it’s really necessary. Let’s face it, our Dads are awesome, no matter how embarrassing or uncool we once thought they were. Click for our tribute to Dads!

We asked around the office for the best Dad stories (and vintage Dad photos). We’d love it if you shared yours with us too.

“My Dad once built a Dune Bug from scratch and convinced four friends to take a ride in it. It couldn’t take turns as sharp as he wanted and ended up slamming into two trees, the second one head on, send all 5 of them flying from the Dune Bug. They all landed in a brier patch and cussed him out.”

“My parents live in the country with no neighbors within eyesight. My dad was showering during a storm, and the water shut off right after he had soaped up. So, he took advantage of the downpour and ran around the front yard in the rain to finish his shower. Needless to say my Mom was pretty surprised to see him run by the window naked and soapy!”

“For a time, my dad lived in Ghana. He took his near-indestructible Pentax Spotmatic with him on almost all of his adventures. That same well-loved Spotmatic was passed down to me and kickstarted my interests in design and photography. Cheers dad!”

“One of my favorite and funniest stories my mom tells of my dad, is when they went to a costume party together shortly after returning from being in Africa with the Peace Corps. My dad wouldn’t say what he was dressed up as they left for the party (he had on a trench coat and some combat boots). After being at the party for a bit and people asking him what his costume was supposed to be, he turned to my mom and whipped open the trench. All he had underneath was a flesh-colored gourd attached around his waist to cover himself and yelled “I’m a flasher!” Apparently, everyone in the room died laughing. Leave it to my dad to have the sickest costume at the party!”

“I’ll never forget the time when my dad and I were building a log bridge over our creek. It was a pretty serious log bridge, who full white oak trees on both sides, about 25′ long, held together by cedar planks. When I asked him how we were going to get the logs across the creek, he replied with, “You’re going to do it by driving the tractor.” I was beyond nervous, but that was the day he taught me how to drive the tractor for the first time. After the bridge was built, I became the designated tractor driver.”

Thanks Dads!

Go ahead, tell us why your Dad is awesome.
