Introducing: Bandelier

February 21 2014

Bandelier is a Los Angeles based accessories line rooted in traditional craft and culture. Each piece is painstakingly made by hand, and though they make a statement, are exceptionally easy to wear. Intrigued by the brand’s artistic vision and loyalty to time-honored techniques, we chatted with Andria, the artist herself, to find out more.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I’m a Southern California native and graduate from Parsons School of Design. At Parsons I apprenticed with a designer named Jason Ross — he really got me hooked on leather as a medium. After graduation I moved to Peru, and worked directly with weavers from the Sacred Valley. The dedication they had towards their work, the way that they seamlessly integrated their craft into their daily life was something that I really related to. I decided to move back to Los Angeles and implement what I learned there into my own lifestyle and design process.

How did Bandelier come about? Can you tell us more about the brand’s concept and inspirations?

I would say my biggest inspiration is the natural landscape and spirit of the American West – the freedom and ingenuity that’s associated with those two ideas is something that I find endlessly evocative. I want to create pieces that are modern and minimal, but are still very much rooted in traditional, time-honored techniques.

What is your design process like?

The central library in downtown LA is where I usually start my process. Then it’s a combination of sketching and sampling at my studio in Mount Washington.

What are you most inspired by at the moment?

Carl Aubock and Martin Puryear.

Who do you see your designs on? Do you have a dream customer–someone you would die to see one of your pieces on?

Someone who’s simply looking for a piece to elevate their basics. Dream Customer: Georgia O’Keeffe.

What are you most excited about or looking forward to right now?

I’m planning a road trip through Arizona this spring. I’ve always wanted to see Antelope Canyon and Arcosanti.
