Fall is here. If you haven’t already outfitted yourself in your favorite trusty sweater, de-mothballed your wool throw blankets and swapped out your no-show socks for those of the cozy crew variety, chances are you will soon. While you’re at it, it’s probably a good idea to brush up your beverage repertoire. Fall calls for bigger, darker spirits, apple sweetness and plenty of aromatic spice. We paid a visit to our good friends at Saison in Richmond to test drive three new cocktails from their autumn menu, perfected for the chilly months ahead.
Carter Mountain Punch
Named for the hilltop apple-picking haven in nearby Charlottesville, the Carter Mountain Punch is a delightful cider-like sipper. Combining two complimentary apple brandies with homemade cinnamon honey, lemon juice and Fernet Branca (which creates a delicate froth when shaken), the Carter Mountain Punch is a fall-time crowd pleaser.
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
.25oz lemon juice
.5oz cinnamon honey (equal parts water and honey with cinnamon sticks steeped overnight)
.5oz Fernet Branca
.5oz Calvados Apple Brandy
1oz Lairds 7 1/2 Year Apple Brandy
Shake with ice, serve in punch cup.
Lovingly described as “a cage match of flavors”, Night Moves is a coveted Saison creation. Sweet Cruzan rum meets the citrusy notes of blanco tequila while the vegetal smoke of Cynar balances out the mix and a bit of salinity peaks through in the finish. Take care when making this one, you’re walking on hallowed grounds.
2 dashes salt
.5oz Cruzan Black Strap Rum
1.5oz Blanco Tequila
I Went to College
A three spirit Fall Old Fashioned. I Went to College takes the enduring classic and throws in a nice sweet cinnamon kick. Drink it on the porch while you watch the leaves change.
2 dashes Meyer lemon bitters
1 Bar spoon cinnamon honey
.5oz George Dickel’s Tennessee Whiskey
.5oz Captain Apple Jack Bonded
.75 Ansac cognac
