The Winners: Go Explore 2016
July 10 2016
Each year, we invite our Instagram followers to share their adventures as a part of our summer Go Explore campaign, and each year we are filled with wanderlust as images from China to Chattanooga filter in.
Wading through hundreds of gorgeous and envy-inducing images, we picked a few of our favorites and put it to a vote. The polls closed this Friday, and we’re thrilled to announce that the dreamy capture of the Bonneville Salt Flats from @heartjojo (at the top of this post) won the popular vote by a small landslide. We caught up with the Texas native to learn a bit more about her summer explorations.

What are your Sunday rituals?
I don’t have a normal work schedule, Thursdays are my Sundays. My boyfriend and I recently moved to Austin and we spend our Thursdays sleeping in, eating at diners, and going on motorcycle adventures.
How are you doing today?
Honestly, sleepy. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow – we are planning on taking a trip to a waterfall at a state park nearby.
Can you tell us a bit about what you do?
I do marketing and events for a retailer and focus on local artisans and makers in my region.
Can you tell us about the shot you’ve shared with us?
I stumbled across a picture of salt flats in South America and discovered that the Bonneville Salt Flats, where the picture was taken, are the only flats within the United States. My boyfriend, Taner, runs a motorcycle shop and has been watching races at Bonneville – turns out he’s always wanted to go. We were hoping to catch a practice for an upcoming race when we stopped by but the flats had flooded (which made for a much cooler picture). If you’re ever near Salt Lake City, you need to visit the flats.
Looks like you’ve been doing your fair share of traveling this summer, can you tell us about some of the places you’ve been?
Taner and I take an annual road trip every May to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary. This year we flew into Montana and started our trip by camping at Glacier National Park (so incredible). We then went to Gig Harbor, Washington for a night of pizza and beer with friends, then made our way to San Francisco to celebrate Taner’s 30th birthday. We also got to stop at Alcatraz; the island seems way too beautiful to have been a prison.
Yosemite was next, it ended up being our favorite. We saw baby bears shortly after entering the park and got to hike to a waterfall; it was breathtaking. Then we Vegas-ed – I still have a 32 cent winnings voucher I need to claim from the Mirage. Taner and I learned that we both hate gambling but love ‘longaritas’. After Vegas we went to Moab for my birthday, camped a night at Manti-La Sal National Forest, and eventually made our way to Utah where we stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats. We ended our trip at Uinta Brewery and flew home. It was the best two weeks.
